About This Event
The global shift away from coal presents a critical juncture for nations reliant on it for energy and livelihoods. For countries like Indonesia and South Africa, a just energy transition means more than just cutting emissions. A just energy transition means safeguarding communities, protecting livelihoods, promoting social inclusion, creating decent jobs, fostering sustainable businesses, and forging new paths for sustainable development.
This event marks the fourth in a series of five virtual policy dialogues jointly organized by the UN Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) and partners in South Africa and Indonesia. The theme for this dialogue is, “Financing the Just Energy Transition”. It sets the stage for knowledge exchange on just transitions in coal mining regions – drawing on actionable measures with practical insights, including under the Partnership for Action on Green Economy, from Indonesia and South Africa, and reflecting on the broader global policy agenda.
Session Objectives
- Present and exchange on South Africa’s and Indonesia’s approaches to financing a just energy transition.
- Explore what makes these financing approaches for the energy transition “just”.
- Identify similarities and differences in financing mechanisms, including the Just Energy Transition Partnerships.
