22 May 2023

On 22 May, Morocco celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity with the international community to promote urgent and transformative action to mitigate and reverse biodiversity loss. On this occasion, PAGE Morocco and the COPERNICEA project organized a conference in Rabat on the theme “From agreement to action: pooling resources and actions to ensure implementation of the new Global Framework at national level”, chaired by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali.

In the opening of the conference, the minister pointed out that it was necessary to work together to translate commitments into actions that would translate these efforts into tangible results and stressed the urgency to stop the loss of biodiversity and take concrete measures to stop and reverse it.

PAGE’s involvement was important as the conference focused on biodiversity mainstreaming in key economic sectors, with biodiversity’s role in the transition towards a green economy. To this end, UNDP presented its work on implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity  under the Nagoya Protocol and the development of a payment system for ecosystem services. While UNEP presented upcoming work with UNIDO on how to finance and budget the biodiversity action plan for effective implementation of the global biodiversity framework (GBF), applied to priority economic sectors.

This conference was a unique opportunity to highlight the many actions undertaken at all levels by the various stakeholders (state actors, international organisations, managers, research institutes, the private sector and civil society) with the aim of ensuring effective implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at national level.

Representatives of ministerial departments, scientific research institutions, governmental and non-governmental stakeholders attended the event at the Ministry’s headquarters in Rabat.

The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated around the world on 22 May each year. The theme chosen for this year is “From Agreement to Action: Rebuilding Biodiversity”, with a view to maintaining the momentum in support of the new post-2020 global biodiversity framework adopted at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in December 2022 in Montreal.

PAGE activities in Morocco plan to contribute towards the achievement of SDGs 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 13 (Climate Action) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) consists of an alliance of five UN agencies, 8 funding partners, and 22 partner countries that work together to transform economies into drivers of sustainability.
