Country Updates (January 2021)

ArgentinaArgentina has submitted its new Nationally Determined Contributions to the UNFCCC. PAGE assisted working with the newly created Board on Labour and Just transition, helping to integrate aims of "Just Transition" and "Sustainable Jobs" (pg 23, 26, 30 and 78).

Mato Grosso, BrazilIn December 2020, PAGE organized a training workshop for the public and private sector based on the guidelines for the standardization and certification of Sustainable Tourism Products. Ten companies from the training will be selected to receive implementation support.

MongoliaFollowing the Climate Ambition Summit 2020, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and UN Country Team in Mongolia held the Partnership for Ambitious Climate Action online forum on 22 December 2020. PAGE spoke at the event, which aimed to gather commitments to the new NDC target of a 27.2% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, announced by the President of Mongolia.

Burkina FasoAligned with the National Green Economy Strategy, PAGE supported two virtual workshops in December and January to train government officials and NGO staff in the development of bankable projects aimed at attracting climate funding.

SenegalLed by UNDP, PAGE conducted a three day training workshop (11-13 December 2020) for 20 young Mékhé women on renewable energy on the use of clean energies to improve health and environmental protection.

GhanaPAGE, in a collaboration with the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), developed a course on green finance targeting public officials and other stakeholders, covering trends, challenges and opportunities in green finance. A pilot training was held on 14-16 December 2020, with a full launch in 2021.

South AfricaThe Green Economy Progress (GEP) Measurement Framework for South Africa was completed in 2020 with its report validated on 8 December – capturing the dimensions and progress of an Inclusive Green Economy in the country.

GuyanaBetween 8-10 December, UNEP and UNITAR, under PAGE, co-organized 'Building back better in Guyana through green trade and industrial policies', a virtual workshop for ministry officials on the design, implementation, and evaluation of public policy at the trade and industrial policy nexus. The training was supported by a former WTO chief economist and lecturers from the University of Guyana.
