Norbert Kurilla

Norbert Kurilla was appointed as a State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak republic in March 2016. In his role, he is responsible for numerous environmental and climate policies including international and EU affairs.

He started his career at the Ministry of Environment as EU affairs coordinator. During 2007 – 2014 served at the Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic to the European Union in Brussels as environmental diplomat. Upon his return to Slovakia in 2014 he took an active part in preparation of the Slovak Presidency in the Council of the European Union and became Director General of the Environmental Policy Directorate at the Ministry of Environment. Subsequently, he led the Slovak Presidency in the Council of the European Union on environment during the second half of 2016. He is a member of the Management Board of the European Environmental Agency for the Slovak Republic and a vice-chair of the OECD Green Action Programme.

Norbert Kurilla has a bachelor degree in Commerce from the University of Economics in Bratislava. He obtained the M. A. degree in International Relations, with a thesis The role of South Korea in south-east Asian area and evolution of Slovak-Korean relations. He is a Ph.D. holder from the Faculty of International Relations at the University of Economics in Bratislava, majoring in international economic relations (2007). During his academic and professional years, he underwent several studies, exchanges and trainings abroad such as Sejong University in South Korea, Gent University in Belgium, UNEP in Kenya, Clingendael Institute in the Netherlands or European Institute of Public Administration in Belgium.
