Recent activities and events

High Level Event: Inclusive and Sustainable Economies Powering the Sustainable Development Goals: PAGE High Level Event was held in Geneva on 4 May 2017. Over 200 participants, including more than 20 Ambassadors, engaged in very solid discussion on role of green economy in SDGs and supported need for financing models that incentivize collaboration between UN agencies. E-learning course on Green Economy and Trade: PAGE has received very positive reviews from the first edition of the Green Economy and Trade e-learning course. Almost 97% of the 43 participants from 33 countries, found it relevant to their jobs and very useful. One participant noted the course “one of the best courses I have ever participated in. The course material was well prepared and the interactive lessons were easy to comprehend. Above all, the course really equips participants with the knowhow of implementing a real concept through the drawing up of an Action Plan for a better and greener economy

Uruguay Ministers Reception: Uruguay has jump-started their PAGE partnership with an evening reception with Ministers on Uruguay’s acceptance to PAGE. At the reception there was a clear indication of strong cross Ministerial support for the work of PAGE. Building on the green economy work completed under an earlier UN Environment project, Uruguay and key ministries have a clear vision for Uruguay’s need to innovate and create value around its bioeconomy.

Mongolia waste management law approved: Mongolia has advanced its efforts to green waste management, in line with the goals of the Green Development Policy, thanks to the efforts PAGE aligned partners. A new waste law was passed following the parliament session on 12 May, based on a IETC/UNITAR framework law guidelines. Additionally, National and Ulaanbaatar City Waste Management Strategies and Action Plans have been finalized thanks to the efforts of IETC, the Government of Mongolia, and AIT RRC.AP.  Germany (IKI) has approved a related project for Mongolia and implementation will start in the coming months.

Upcoming activities and events

Mongolia Trade and Green Economy Training 28-29 May 2017: This training will focus on sustainable agricultural production and exports, covering topics such as organic agriculture, sustainability standards, eco-labels, and certification schemes. The project will later on deliver a stocktaking report on Green Trade development in Mongolia, with concrete recommendations for next steps after its exit from PAGE this year.

South Africa NSC: South Africa will host a National Steering Committee meeting  on 25 May. We are pleased to have confirmed participation of country delegations of both SECO and the EU.

Senegal fund for oil and gas sector: In Senegal preparations are advancing for a technical study on setting up a sustainability fund for the oil and gas sector. The TORs are available in the workspace and we invite your suggests on this exciting workstream.

China trade workstream: Two major developments under Trade and Green Economy:

  1. A workshop on “Trading with Developing Countries in Environmental Goods and Services” on 5 June 2017 and a study on “South-South Trade in Environmental Goods and Services in Jiangsu”. A tentative PDF iconworkshop Agenda is available. 
  2. Two training sessions (first one in July) with a focus on textile sector and small producers as a local focus for value chain upgrading and restructuring.

The PAGE work on Trade and Green Economy in China is executed by the Environment and Trade Hub of UN Environment and is expected to lead to the launch of a national platform on sustainability standards in early June in Quingdao.

High Level Political Forum

Thanks to the support indicated at the last Donor Steering Committee meeting, PAGE is advancing preparations for a side event at the High Level Political Forum. The event, “Inclusive Green Economy Approaches for Advancing the SDGs and Promoting Shared Prosperity” will be co-lead by the Government of Finland and PAGE. We welcome your participation and further guidance on planning for the event.

OECD Green Growth and SD Forum

A joint PAGE-OECD lunch time event is planned at the OECD Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum on 21 November, with a focus on Greening the Ocean Economy. We welcome your participation and collaboration on this event.
