Country Updates (February-March 2021)

Barbados: PAGE Barbados supported the 22nd Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean. The process represented 26 months of work and culminated in 8 decisions and a political declaration, including a Communique on COVID-19 Sustainable Recovery. The Forum focused overall on the environmental dimensions of sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.  

South Africa: PAGE South Africa hosted a validation workshop on the Biomaterial Market Demand Study on 2 February. The event aimed to present and discuss recent work on stimulating demand for bioplastics in South Africa, which offers a potential decarbonisation option for the petrochemicals value chain. The Market Demand Study contributes to the Plastic Master Plan currently under development by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition. 

Peru PAGE is collaborating with GGGI on a green jobs dialogue to be conducted within the framework of the upcoming 2021 Peruvian elections. The dialogue, to take place in March, will promote the inclusion of green jobs in the National Work Plan of the presidential candidates. 

Indonesia: A Rapid Assessment on the Green Stimulus Package for National Economic Recovery in the Energy Sector (and accompanying Executive Summary) was completed in January 2021, submitted to Bappenas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The assessment outlines various green stimuli that will encourage the use of renewable energy and increase energy efficiency to build momentum on green recovery and low carbon development in Indonesia.  

Uruguay: PAGE and GIZ, together with the Ministry of Labor, the ILO and DESEM (an NGO empowering youth and sustainable innovation), are currently implementing a Sustainable Entrepreneurship Training Program in Uruguay for young people aged 18-29 years. Following on from workshops conducted in 2020, 17 projects selected to be supported by a seed fund have started implementation. The projects are supporting key areas such as sustainable tourism, community organic gardens and circular economy.

Senegal:  PAGE organized a virtual training of trainers on the theme "How to develop, deliver and evaluate effective e-learning", with the aim of helping training institutions in West Africa to create their own e-learning modules. Four sessions were held in January and attended by 23 professionals.
